ALBERT PUJOLS OF THE LOS ANGELES ANGELS NAMED THE BUDWEISER PRESENTS AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR JUNE
Angels first baseman Albert Pujols has been voted the Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month for June. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor of Major League Baseball and sponsor of 23 of 30 clubs, is also the presenting sponsor of the National League Player of the Month Award.
Pujols batted .303 (30-for-99) with 23 runs scored, four doubles, 13 home runs and 26 RBI in 27 games to claim his seventh career Player of the Month Award and first in the AL, last winning as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals in August 2010. Among his AL counterparts, the 35-year old finished first in home runs and slugging percentage (.737), tied for first in RBI, second in extra-base hits (17) and tied for second in runs scored.
With his 13th home run coming in Tuesday’s home tilt against the New York Yankees, Pujols tied Mo Vaughn (May 2000) and Tim Salmon (June 1996) for the club record for home runs hit in any month. The 13 homers were his highest single-month mark since joining the Angels and most since June 2009 when he connected for 14 round-trippers. Already with an AL-leading 24 home runs this season, the nine-time NL All-Star had previously hit 24 homers before the All-Star break just once in the last 10 seasons (32 in 2009).
Only Garret Anderson (26 in 2000), Troy Glaus (25 in 2000) and Leon Wagner (25 in 1962) have hit more homers for the Angels before the Midsummer Classic. With more than 20 home runs this season, Pujols has eclipsed the 20-homer mark for the 14th time in 15 seasons, joining Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson, as well as Chipper Jones as the only players to accomplish the feat.
The 15-year-veteran reached the 20-homer plateau in 65 games this season, his fastest since 2009 (61 games). On June 22nd, the three-time NL MVP delivered his second multi-home run game of the season and 50th of his career. Since his debut in 2001, his 50 multi-homer games pace the Majors. Additionally, over the course of his award-winning month, the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native passed Hall of Famers Jimmie Foxx and Mickey Mantle for 16th on MLB’s all-time home run list with 544 and now sits just four homers shy of Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt. The versatile first baseman is also one stolen base shy of becoming the fourth player in Major League history with 500 home runs, 100 stolen bases and a .300 career batting average.
Others receiving votes included Manny Machado (.365, 23 R, 8 HR, 22 RBI) of the Baltimore Orioles; Brett Gardner (.351, 27 R, 39 H, 11 2B) of the New York Yankees; and Miguel Cabrera (.384, .480 OBP, 33 H, 19 RBI) and J.D. Martinez (.677 SLG, 16 R, 11 HR, 26 RBI) of the Detroit Tigers.
The Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month, Albert Pujols, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for his accomplishment.
